Police Officer Takes Down Suspect

A police officer at Western Illinois University (WIU) took down an active shooter on campus Tuesday afternoon, university officials said.
The incident began at approximately 1:30 p.m. when a gunman opened fire in a classroom building on the Macomb campus.
A WIU police officer who was nearby responded to the scene and engaged the suspect in a shootout.
- The officer shot and wounded the suspect, who was taken into custody.
- No other injuries were reported.
The suspect was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
The university is currently on lockdown as police investigate the incident.
Students and staff are being asked to shelter in place until further notice.
